Nearly 100 medical workers at the Ho Chi Minh City Children’s Hospital and from other leading medical facilities in the city participated in the challenging operation.

The twins are in good health following the operation. They were taken out of the operating room after doctors completed the final shaping stage for their organs. The twins will continue to be closely monitored for postoperative complications.

Professor Tran Dong A, one of key doctors who performed the operation, said the chance of the children making a full recovery is very good.

He said the operation is a historical milestone that shows how far the Vietnamese health sector has come since the separation of Viet-Duc twins 32 years ago.

“The Viet-Duc twins conjoined at the pelvic abdomen had only 3 legs. The conjoined twins Dieu Nhi and Truc Nhi are luckier to have 4 legs. Both surgeries were rare. Each had its own difficulties. Ischiopagus tetrapus conjoined twins account for only 6% of all twins,” Dong A said.
