PM holds bilateral meetings on sidelines of expanded G7 Summit

(VOVworld) – Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc met with Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena on the sidelines of the expanded G7 Summit in Japan on Thursday.

Mr. Phuc said Vietnam is willing to share its experience and boost technical cooperation with Sri Lanka in agriculture and suggested the two countries’ Sub-Committees for Commercial Cooperation seek ways to boost two-way trade. He asked Sri Lanka to support the stance of ASEAN and Vietnam on settling East Sea issues through peaceful means in line with international law.  President Sirisena wants to learn from Vietnam’s development experience via visit exchanges at all levels and said a business delegation led by the Sri Lankan PM will visit Vietnam in the near future.

PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc holds talks with UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon

Meeting UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, PM Phuc said that Vietnam is committed to the UN’s efforts to build a world of peace and sustainable development through its peacekeeping missions. He informed Mr. Ban of Vietnam’s plans to implement the Paris Agreement on climate change and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Mr. Ban pledged to help Vietnam enhance its role in the UN peacekeeping mission and said he hopes that in the future female officers will be deployed for the mission. The UN Secretary General reiterated his support for the peaceful settlement of East Sea disputes in line with international law, including the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, and said he hopes ASEAN and China will fully and effectively realise the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea towards formulating a Code of Conduct in the East Sea.

During a reception for Angel Gurria, Secretary General of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), PM Phuc asked for further assistance for Vietnam in improving the effectiveness of ODA, fine-tuning investment policy and environment, green growth, and climate change activities, sustainable agriculture, and workforce development. Gurria pledged to help Vietnam train high-quality workers and successfully perform its role as APEC Chair 2017.

Receiving Christine Lagarde, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), PM Phuc called for the IMF’s continued support and policy consultation in macro-economic stabilisation and economic reform in Vietnam. Ms. Lagarde praised Vietnam’s reform efforts and successful application of a socialist-oriented market economy model.

The same day, PM Phuc met with Hideaki Omura, Governor of Japan’s Aichi prefecture, Hiroyuki Ishige, President of the Japan External Trade Organization, and Shinichiro Ito, President of Japanese airline group ANA Holding Incorporated. Mr. Phuc said the Vietnamese government will continue to finetune Vietnam’s legal system to create a more transparent and favorable environment for investors, including those from Japan.
