Quang Binh welcomes UNESCO status for Bai Choi singing

(VOVWORLD) - A ceremony was held in Dong Hoi city, Quang Binh province, on Wednesday to receive a certificate from UNESCO recognizing Bai Choi singing as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Speaking at the event, Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Tran Tien Dung said that the UNESCO recognition of Bai Choi is of great significance as honoring its traditional values and inspiring pride and responsibility for preserving and promoting Bai Choi singing. Quang Binh authorities will take this occasion to hold the 2019 Bai Choi singing festival. 

The art of Bai Choi in central Vietnam was inscribed in December, 2017, on the UNESCO Representative list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Bai Choi, a style of folk singing in central Vietnam, is a communal activity often seen at spring festivals. It resembles a game using playing cards and village huts to disseminate folklore and involving music, poetry, acting, painting, and literature.
