Right-wing UMP claims major victory in French elections

(VOVworld) – France’s Union for a Popular Movement (UMP) and its centrist allies from the Union of Democrats and Independents (UDI) claimed a majority in 64 out of 101 local councils across France in the second round of departmental elections.

President Francois Hollande’s Socialist Party lost 30 departments out of 61. The National Front did not lead in any department but its candidates passed to the second round of the elections and support for its views is increasing in a number of localities.
