(VOVWORLD) - Hours before his first trip to Asia on Friday, US President Joe Biden met with the leaders of Sweden and Finland who are setting aside their long-standing neutrality to join the NATO alliance.

According to White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan, it is a historic event when two nations with such a long tradition of neutrality will be joining the world's most powerful defense alliance.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan says Turkey is opposed to NATO membership for Finland and Sweden. He wants the ban on selling certain weapons to Turkey to be lifted.
