UK Prime Minister to discuss Brexit with Irish PM

(VOVWORLD) - The UK media said Sunday that Prime Minister Boris Johnson accepted Irish PM Leo Varadkar’s offer of a meeting to discuss Brexit, in particular the “backstop” provision relating to the Ireland-UK border.

The meeting will take place in Dublin prior to the G7 Summit at France at month’s end.

Johnson has insisted that he won't meet EU leaders for talks until the backstop is dropped. But he has also promised that " under no circumstances" will there be a hard border on the island of Ireland.

The Irish backstop is an insurance policy in Brexit negotiations. It’s meant to make sure that the Irish border remains open as it is today whatever the outcome of the UK-EU negotiations about their future relationship after Brexit.
