UN chief denounces attacks on villagers in western Niger

(VOVWORLD) - UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres strongly condemned the attacks Saturday by unidentified gunmen on two villages in western Niger, close to the border with Mali.

In a statement, the UN chief expressed confidence that the Nigerian authorities will swiftly identify and bring the perpetrators to justice. He reaffirmed the support of the United Nations for the government and people of Niger in their fight against terrorism, violent extremism, and organized crime.

Approximately 100 people were reportedly killed in the villages of Tchombangou and Zaroumbareye in the latest civilian massacre. The attacks occurred Saturday, two days after Niger’s first-round presidential results were announced.
