UN General Assembly opens

(VOVworld) – The 69th session of the UN General Assembly opened in New York on Wednesday.

Attended by the delegates of the 193 UN members, the first meeting of the session was chaired by Assembly President and former Ugandan Minister of Foreign Affairs Sam Kutesa Kahamba and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

In his opening speech, Kahamba said this session will focus on approval of the UN post-2015 development agenda, measures to mitigate global climate change, and challenges to security and stability in regions around the world.

144 heads of states are expected to participate in sessions during the next two weeks. For 4 days beginning next Tuesday, 195 speakers representing UN members and observers will deliver speeches on various issues. Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh will address a high-level plenary meeting of the General Assembly.
