UN urges Israel and Palestine to resume direct negotiations

(VOVworld)- The resumption of direct negotiations is key for Israel and Palestine to reach an agreement on a two-state solution. UN chief Ban Ki-moon listed on Tuesday the many obstacles preventing both sides speaking with a common voice to continue with their talks.

He was addressing an international meeting entitled “The Question of Palestine” in Geneva on Tuesday. He also expressed concern on many pressing issues that require support from the international community, including the imprisonment of many Palestinian political prisoners.  

Direct talks between Israel and the Palestinians have been frozen since September 2010 due to a bitter dispute over the building of Jewish settlements.

The recent conflict between Israel and Palestine began when Israeli air strikes hit Palestinian territory in response to Jihad Islamic group’s attack into southern Israel.
