The International Committee of the Red Cross voiced concern Monday over renewed border clashes between Cambodia and Thailand, and urged them to stay calm and reduce tensions.
In Bangkok, Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said the government is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating security to protect civilians. Thailand will act carefully and follow humanitarian rules along the border, he said.
In Cambodia, Prime Minister Hun Manet said his priority is protecting Cambodia and its citizens. Cambodian Defense Ministry spokesperson Maly Socheata said at a press briefing on Monday evening that thousands of families have fled their homes, and 377 schools in four border provinces have temporarily closed as a result of escalation.
