(VOVworld) – A US missile defense system, called the missile defense shield in Europe, was activated on Thursday in defiance of Russia’s warnings that the action could threaten peace in central Europe.

US Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter said the shield’s activation in Romania proves that the US has the capacity to protect its NATO allies in Europe.

Carter said Iran is increasing its missile capability, so the US needs to be ready to counter any threat. He said the shield is not aimed at Russia and will be handed over to NATO Command soon.
