The assistance comes as the US completes its troop withdrawal from Afghanistan. "This funding will allow our partners to provide lifesaving protection, shelter, livelihoods opportunities, essential health care, emergency food aid, water, sanitation, and hygiene services to respond to the needs generated by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic," the State Department said in a release.

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said after the US withdraws its troops, it will maintain its engagement in Afghanistan through diplomatic and economic activities to help build a sustainable peace and stability in Afghanistan.
