US imposes sanctions on Russia

(VOVWORLD) - The US on Thursday expelled 10 Russian diplomats and announced a broad array of sanctions on Russia, despite President Joe Biden’s previous proposal of a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The US accused Russia of massive cyber-hacking and interference in last year’s US election. The US punished 32 Russian individuals for attempting to change the US election results last year. The US Treasury Department announced sanctions on 8 individuals and entities involved in Russia's annexation of Crimea.

The EU, the UK, Australia, and Canada had already imposed sanctions against Russia for the same reason. NATO declared its support for the US decision.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said Russia protests and will retaliate against the sanctions. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov called the sanctions “illegal”.
