Earlier the same day, the US Senate approved the legislation to end the federal government shutdown. The bill allocates funding for the Department of Defense, the Department of Agriculture, veterans’ agencies, and Congress through next fall, while maintaining funding for other agencies until the end of January 2026.

With the government reopening, about 670,000 federal employees will return to work. Those who still worked during the shutdown, including more than 60,000 air traffic controllers and airport security officers, will receive back pay. This legislation will protect federal workers from baseless firings, reinstate those who have been terminated during the shutdown.

The Congressional Budget Office estimated that the shutdown cost the US economy approximately 14 billion USD.
