US President: tariffs on Chinese imports don’t cause US inflation

(VOVWORLD) - US President Donald Trump said the tariffs that his administration has imposed on Chinese imports are not pushing up US inflation but are prompting manufacturers in China to move elsewhere.

Trump said on Twitter shortly after beginning a state visit to Britain that many firms are leaving China for other countries, including the US in order to avoid paying the tariffs, adding there are no visible increases in US prices, but the US is taking in billions.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the US is seeking to level the playing field with China after decades of unfair trade practices. He made the remarks after meeting Dutch Foreign Minister Stef Blok in the Hague, Netherlands. Pompeo said Trump wants to ensure that Chinese and US companies are doing business on equal terms. He said the US is very concerned that Western companies, American companies and others that enter the Chinese markets aren’t treated the same way that Chinese companies are treated when they enter Western markets.
