US Senate passes temporary funding bill to reopen government

(VOVWORLD) - The US Senate passed a stopgap budget bill by a vote of 60–40 on Monday, enabling the federal government to resume operations at least until January 30 of next year.

The bill will now go to the House of Representatives and then to the President for signature. House Speaker Mike Johnson said the House might vote as soon as Wednesday. The impasse has become a deepening disruption of federal programs and services, the longest in history.

The legislation covers full funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program through September next year, and keeps most government services funded until January 30. In a major concession, Democrats accepted a version of the bill that does not include funding for the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) subsidies, a key sticking point that had stalled previous budget efforts. The absence of those healthcare subsidy provisions means more than 20 million Americans could face sharply higher insurance costs in coming months.
