(VOVWORLD) - US Senators have reached a temporary funding agreement to keep the federal government running until January 30, 2026. If approved in a vote expected later Monday, the deal will still need to pass the House of Representatives, a process that could take several days.
On Sunday evening (local time), a bipartisan coalition of Senate Democrats and Republicans reached a rare compromise, securing the 60 votes needed to advance a stopgap spending bill that would fund the government through the end of January 2026.
The Senate is expected to hold a final vote on Monday night. Once approved, the measure must be cleared by the House and signed into law by President Donald Trump.
While it remains uncertain whether House Democrats will back the proposal, President Trump quickly voiced optimism that the longest government shutdown in US history could soon come to an end.
“It looks like we’re getting very close to the shutdown ending. We never agreed to give any substantial money, or any money, to prisoners or illegal immigrants that come into our country, and I think the Democrats understand that. You’ll know very soon,” said Trump.
The US government has been shut down since October 1, after Democrats and Republicans failed to reach an agreement on a federal budget. The closure — now lasting more than 40 days — has caused widespread disruption across the country, severely affecting public services, aviation, and airport operations.
The Senate had previously held 14 unsuccessful votes to reopen the government, each time falling short of the 60-vote threshold required for passage.
