(VOVWORLD) - Swimmer Nguyen Huy Hoang earned Vietnam’s first-ever gold medal in a men’s event at the Asian Aquatics Championships.

He finished first at the 1,500m freestyle final with a time of 15 minutes and 15.1 seconds at the 11th Asian Aquatics Championships in India on Monday.
The 25-year-old athlete from Quang Binh is considered Vietnam’s best male swimmer to date.
He competed at the 2021 and 2024 Olympics, and previously won gold at the 2018 Youth Olympics in the 800m freestyle event. Hoang secured a silver and a bronze at the 2018 Asian Games (ASIAD 18) and 2 bronzes at ASIAD 19.
He also earned a total of 11 golds, 2 silvers, and 1 bronze at the 2017, 2019, 2021, and 2023 SEA Games.
The 11th Asian Aquatics Championships is being held from September 28 to October 10, with 1,100 athletes from 24 teams. In addition to Huy Hoang’s gold medal, Vietnam has so far claimed 3 silvers and 2 bronzes.
