(VOVworld)- The UN Resident Coordinator in Vietnam has praised Vietnam’s achievements and efforts in promoting human rights. In an interview with the Vietnam News Agency, Pratibha Mehta said Vietnam has joined most major international conventions on human rights and ,ade a great effort to promote fundamental rights. Ms Mehta said the Vietnamese government has actively participated in international human rights mechanisms which aim at overseeing human rights cases including the government’s compliances with key treaties on human rights. In 2009, Vietnam’s Universal Periodic Review report was adopted by the UN Human Rights Council. 93 of its 123 proposals on improving human rights were adopted. The UN Resident Coordinator highlighted Vietnam’s constant efforts to improve its legal and judicial systems, build a state governed by law and strengthen national institutions to promote human rights. Vietnam has also sought public opinions concerning draft laws and paid special attention to the people’s role in law building.
