Vietnam expects more effective, pragmatic ties with US: PM

(VOVWORLD) - Vietnam holds great importance to its relationship with the US and expects to boost bilateral ties on a more practical and effective basis.

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc made the remarks on Monday while receiving US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in Hanoi. Mr. Phuc stressed that bilateral economic and trade ties continue to play a key factor in motivating the two countries’ relationship. He expressed his delight at progress in bilateral cooperation in various fields which have satisfied  both countries' expectations. Prime Minister Phuc hailed recent efforts of concerned parties in speeding up the denuclearization and peace process on the Korean peninsula, pledging that Vietnam will continue to be a responsible member of the international community in this process. 

Mr. Pompeo said the US attaches importance to its comprehensive partnership with Vietnam and will continue to promote this relationship. He reiterated the US’s commitment in settling the war aftermaths including expediting a project on dioxin decontamination at Bien Hoa airport. 

Both sides agreed to boost the exchange of delegations, especially at the higher level. They also discussed regional and international issues of mutual concern, including the East Sea. Secretary Pompeo underscored the US’s support for  peaceful dispute resolution in accordance with international law, and for US-ASEAN strategic partnership and ASEAN’s central role in the Indo-Pacific region.
