Vietnam finishes first at 2023 SEA Games with 136 gold medals

(VOVWORLD) -The closing ceremony of the 32nd Southeast Asian Games took place on Wednesday at Morodok Techo stadium in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

On Tuesday, the last day of competition, Vietnamese athletes won 12 more gold medals, 3 silver medals, and 5 bronze medals  in weightlifting, wrestling, kickboxing, judo, boat racing, fencing, and dance sport, to top the medal tally with 136 gold medals and fulfill the targets set by the delegation.

The delegation, for the first time, won unexpected gold medals in kun bokator and ouk chaktrang, a Khmer type of chess. The Vietnamese women’s football team took the championship for the 4th consecutive time.

Dang Ha Viet, head of the Vietnamese delegation, said, “The success of the Vietnamese female football players was a milestone in the success of the Vietnamese delegation and raised the spirit of the delegation at the Games. Vietnam women contributed greatly to the overall success of the Vietnamese delegation."

At SEA Games 32 Vietnam’s 700 athletes competed in 30 of 37 sports.
