Vietnam implements commitments on climate change response

At a high level dialogue on climate change in Hanoi on Wednesday, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Le Cong Thanh said: “An action plan to implement the Paris Agreement, focusing on Nationally Determined Contributions, has been implemented in all ministries, sectors, and localities. It includes the implementation of a resolution on sustainable development in the Mekong Delta as a means of adapting to climate change. Many projects have been carried out using government budget funding, as well as funding from development partners. These activities have seen encouraging results.”

Caitlin Wiesen, UNDP Acting Resident Representative in Vietnam, appreciated Vietnam’s implementation of climate change response programs and ]furthermore of being the first ASEAN country selected to carry out the Green Climate Fund to strengthen climate change resilience.

She said that Vietnam should Doimoi or renew climate change actions. Vietnam’s climate renewal can take advantage of rapid technological innovation, allow clean investment, and improve resource productivity. Vietnam has tremendous potential for renewable energy. Vietnam can deploy at least 85GW of solar generation capacity and 21GW of wind energy well before 2050, showing that a low carbon pathway is possible.

The Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change revealed a special report on the impacts of 1.5 degrees Celsius of global warming, as well as related issues pertaining to green house effects. Countries will discuss the report at the 24th UN Conference on Climate Change in Poland in December.
