The officials agreed that peace, cooperation, and development are shared goals and that all disputes and disagreements need to be resolved through peaceful dialogue, on the basis on international law, without using force or threat of force.

They agreed that stronger efforts should be made to strengthen defense ties and make them a pillar of their extensive strategic partnership. Both sides agreed to increase delegation exchanges, promote the defense policy dialogue mechanism, and organize consultations between their naval, ground and air forces. They will step up coordination and mutual support at defense-security mechanisms and multilateral forums, while bolstering collaboration in military medicine, cyber security, defense manufacturing, UN peacekeeping activities, marine security, and search and rescue.

The Japanese Ministry of Defense voiced its support for Vietnam’s efforts to address unexploded ordnance and dioxin issues, and said it will soon carry out programs to assist these efforts.
