Vietnam reiterates commitment to UN peacekeeping mission

(VOVWORLD) - The Vietnamese government pledges to further participate in the UN peacekeeping activities, said Deputy Defense Minister Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh at the UN Peacekeeping Ministerial Meeting in New York on Friday.

Vinh, who is also Head of the Steering Committee for UN Peacekeeping Mission of the Vietnamese Ministry of National Defense, told the discussion on assessing peacekeeping activities that Vietnam strongly supported the UN initiative on strengthening women’s role in UN peacekeeping activities. He said the UN highly acknowledges the capability, skills, professionalism, and disciplines of Vietnamese female officers who are working in South Sudan.  Vietnam plans to coordinate with UNDP to organize an international workshop on women’s participation in UN peacekeeping activities. later this year. Concluding his speech, the Deputy Defense Minister reiterated the Vietnamese government’s determination to build sustainable peace and security in the world. He called for international support for Vietnam’s bid to become a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in 2020.

More than 500 delegates from 150 countries and international organizations attended the event.
