At a regular press conference in Hanoi on Thursday, Ms Hang said the Vietnam Customs Department is taking specific steps to prevent this activity and protect domestic production.

Answering reporters’ questions on Vietnamese fishermen’s saving Philippine fishing boats and fishermen in the Reed Bank in Vietnam’s Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelago on June 9, Ms Hang said: “Vietnam sees that all ships including fishing vessels operating at sea are responsible for abiding by international law, particularly the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and the Convention of the International Maritime Organization of the UN. Accordingly, vessels are responsibly to support fishermen in distress at sea. Vietnamese fishing boats implemented international obligations when operating at sea as stipulated at the UNCLOS and the IMO Convention to which Vietnam is a member.”
