The statements said China has seriously violated Vietnam’s sovereignty, sovereignty rights, and jurisdiction over its EEZ and continental shelf. China’s actions have violated international law and the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea signed between China and ASEAN countries in 2002, contradicted to agreements between Chinese and Vietnamese leaders, and negatively affected the two countries’ relations.

The two organizations requested China to withdraw its oil rig and escort ships from Vietnam’s sea, abide by international law, especially the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, and not repeat similar actions in the future.
