Vietnam, US make remarkable progress in security, defense cooperation

(VOVWORLD) - Defense Secretary James Mattis said that the US wants to strengthen cooperation with Vietnam in defense, search and rescue efforts, relief aid, maritime security, peacekeeping, and recovery from war consequences.

Meeting outgoing Vietnamese Ambassador Pham Quang Vinh on Friday, he affirmed US support for Vietnam’s strong development, independence, and prosperity. The two officials praised strides in the Vietnam-US comprehensive partnership in recent years, including defence cooperation.

The two discussed a number of issues of mutual concern, including the strengthening of relation between ASEAN and the US, and the maintenance of peace, security and development cooperation in the region, including the East Sea, thus ensuring maritime and aviation freedom and security and respect for international law and the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea 1982 (UNCLOS).
