Vietnamese weightlifter breaks Asian record

(VOVWORLD) - Vietnam claimed its first gold medal in weightlifting at the 2025 Asian Youth Games in Bahrain on Monday evening. 

Competing in the snatch event for the men’s 65kg category, 16-year-old Nguyen Thanh Duy lifted 120kg to place 4th. But in the clean and jerk, he delivered a standout performance with a successful lift of 156kg.

With a total lift of 276kg, Thanh Duy secured Vietnam’s first gold medal at the Games. He also broke the Asian youth record in the men’s 65kg clean and jerk.

The silver medal went to Beibarys Yerseit of Uzbekistan with 275kg total, while the bronze was claimed by Choe Jin Myong of North Korea with 274kg.

Vietnam sent 50 athletes to compete in 11 sports at this year’s Asian Youth Games. So far, the team has won 5 silver and 6 bronze medals in addition to Thanh Duy’s gold medal.
