Vietnam’s stance on East Sea issues

(VOVworld) – At a regular press briefing of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday, spokesman Luong Thanh Nghi answered reporters’ question on Vietnam’s response toward the information that Chinese Taiwan conducting oil exploration around Ba Binh island of Vietnam’s Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelago.

"Vietnam has sufficient legal and historical evidence to confirm its sovereignty over Hoang Sa (Paracel) and Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelagos. Taiwan’s plan to explore oil in the sea around the Ba Binh island is a severe violation of Vietnam’s sovereignty over Truong Sa archipelago, which causes tensions and complicates the East Sea situation. Vietnam strongly opposes and requests Taiwan to immediately abandon its illegal plan," Nghi said.

Spokesman Luong Thanh Nghi answered reporters’ question on Vietnam’s comment on China and Taiwan’s expression of concern that the Vietnamese Maritime Law coming into effective will affect the relations among regional countries. "Regarding the Vietnamese Maritime Law, we have repeatedly expressed our view points. The approval of the Vietnamese Maritime Law is a normal and necessary move of a nation over its coastal sovereignty and a member of the UN 1982 Convention on the Law of the Sea. The Vietnamese Maritime Law defines Vietnam’s wish to peacefully resolve disputes in the East Sea based on international law, especially the UN 1982 Convention on the Law of the Sea and related agreements and mechanisms, contributing to maintaining peace, stability, security, and cooperation in the East Sea."
