WHO chief visits quake-hit northwestern Syria

(VOVWORLD) -World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Wednesday went to northwestern Syria controlled by opposition forces and visited several hospitals and a shelter for those displaced by the devastating earthquakes that hit Syria and Turkey early last month.

His visit came after activists and emergency teams decried the UN's slow response to the quake.

The UN said at least 420 trucks loaded with UN aid have crossed into the opposition-held pocket since the tragedy, which killed more than 50,000 people.

Local officials in Syria have put the death toll in opposition-held areas at more than 4,500. The Syrian government says 1,400 people were killed in areas under its control.
