Business director supports farmers during pandemic

(VOVWORLD) - When the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho began social distancing due to COVID-19, Tran Vu Truong, director of Truong Dung Auto Company in Cai Rang district, closed his transportation business to do charity work. Truong’s activities have encouraged many philanthropists to join his efforts to help needy people.

For nearly 2 months late last year when Can Tho was hard hit by COVID-19, Truong and drivers for his company were busy from early morning buying agricultural products from local farmers. Truong says farmers have suffered a lot from the pandemic.

“People help one another during difficult times. I’m luckier than many others, so I want to do something to help those who are more disadvantaged,” said Truong.

At first, Truong planned to donate 8,500 USD to charity. Then, he decided to work with the Can Tho municipal Youth Union buying agricultural products from local farmers. He also deployed 7 trucks and vans to transport donated goods to field hospitals, poor workers, and people in quarantine.

Nguyen Phuong Tung of the Can Tho municipal Youth Union said that Truong has helped distribute more than 60 tons of vegetable and fruits worth nearly 30,000 USD.

“Although his business was also affected by the pandemic, Truong and his drivers were still very active helping others,” said Tung.

Truong has donated hundreds of gifts to poor students in Can Tho city and given rice and other necessities to poor people and volunteers at COVID-19 checkpoints in Mekong Delta provinces and cities.
