Phan Van An and many other farmers in An Dinh commune have prospered by raising cows loaned to them by Mr. Det. Over the past 15 years, Det, called “Mr. Muoi” by his neighbors, has supported struggling farmers by lending them cows and teaching them husbandry techniques.

“Mr. Muoi showed us techniques for cow raising and preventing animal diseases. With extra income earned from husbandry, many farmers now can invest in other areas and escape from poverty,” said Mr. An.

Mr. Det once struggled for survival on his small farm before starting his husbandry business with a cow he bought in 1980. Det bought an additional 1.4 hectares to grow grass for his cows and was soon earning thousands of USD per year. He has helped hundreds of other farmers develop husbandry, and many of them have become much more prosperous.

“I used to live in poverty. When my life got better, I wanted to help other disadvantaged people,” said Det.

Huynh Van Det has been named a “prominent farmer” for 5 consecutive years in Ben Tre province and a role model for studying and following the moral example of President Ho Chi Minh. He has been involved in building charity houses, upgrading roads, and building bridges in his area.

“Huynh Van Det has helped local farmers a lot with his cow lending model which has been replicated in other areas. He has donated generously and has mobilized resources to help poor local farmers,” said Mr. Tran The Hien, Vice Chairman of An Dinh commune’s People’s Committee.

Despite his advancing age, Det still continues to research high-quality cow breeds.

“I will continue my work and support poor farmers to the best of my ability,” he said.
