(VOVWORLD) - A series of works “Theory and history of modern Vietnamese literature” by Associate Professor Dr. Phan Trong Thuong has won State Prize in Science and Technology. The series is highly appreciated for identifying and explaining the achievements of the Vietnamese literature in the renewal period as well as working out development orientations for Vietnamese literature in the coming time.

Thuong’s "Theory and history of modern Vietnamese literature" consists of 3 works: Theoretical issues of Vietnamese drama history in the early 20th century, Literature – authors and works, and Assessment of literary values.
Each work reflects one period of Vietnam’s economic development. Associate Professor Dr. Pham Quang Long of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, said Professor Thuong’s research project identifies and explains specific literary phenomena and provides a systematic theory of literature and the arts.
“Professor Thuong’s works are researched and assessed on a scientific basis. As Vice Chairman of the Central Council for the Theory and Criticism for Literature and Arts and former Head of the Institute of Literature, he did well in this field,” said Long.
According to the jury board, the series includes theories on the history, and nature of literature and the arts, the role of literature and the arts in shaping a person’s personality and lifestyle, the forecasting function of literature, viewpoints and methods, and future development orientations for literature and the arts.
“I have done research on studies carried out by my predecessors and found new angles to deal with. There are different approaches to the same issue. I will continue that with new scientific approaches, theories, and different viewpoints”, said Professor Thuong.

Associate Professor Dr. Phan Trong Thuong began researching theories and history in the 1970s and 80s.
“I want to publicize my research and studies to literature lovers. My research targets my colleagues in various fields and the wider public. Making others understand your purposes and thoughts is a hard task for an author,” he said.
The State Prize in Science and Technology is the highest award given by the Party and State for outstanding research projects in science and technology.
At the award ceremony on November 23 in Hanoi, Minister of Science and Technology Huynh Thanh Dat said Thuong’s series is a significant milestone in Vietnam’s language and culture research.
