The custom of "buttock flapping" of Mong ethnic people

(VOVworld) – Mong ethnic people of the northern mountainous provinces welcomed the New Year 2014 with colorful activities. On the 1st of January, after rituals to commemorate their ancestors at home, Mong people, young and old alike, in their beautiful dresses, flocked to festivals celebrating the New Year.

More and more people flocked to the center of Khau Vai, Can Chu Pin, and Lung Pu communes in Meo Vac district. Many of them were from the neighboring district of Dong Van. Together, young Mong boys and girls played many traditional folk games such as “con throwing” which involves tossing around a fringed cloth ball as well as duet folk singing, and “khen” dancing. Doc Viet Thanh, Chairman of Lung Pu Communal People’s Committee in Meo Vac district, said: "Ensuring a happy New Year festival for Mong ethnic people is one of the province and district’s important tasks. We always do our best so that Mong people enjoy a happy Tet."

This year’s spring festivals of the H’ Mong people are more interesting thanks to the festival of “buttock flapping” – a tradition that had disappeared for many years. The custom of “buttock flapping” is only observed on the first days of the New Year. The action is considered a declaration of love between a boy and a girl have fallen for each other. According to the tradition, the couple has to smack each other’s behind 9 times to make the romance official. Holding his girlfriend’s hand, Mong boy Mi Say said: “I arrived at the spring festival at dawn to join in the fun activities and seek friends. My girlfriend lives in another commune and it’s not easy for us to meet each other often. She is a good girl and I want to marry her. Today she accepted my love and our wedding will take place with the help of a matchmaker.”

For Mong people, this custom is not just for fun. It’s a very special and unique cultural tradition. Boys and girls often know each other in advance. They just use this custom to declare their love out loud. Giang Thi Du, a resident of Ta Lung A hamlet of Meo Vac district, said: "I was told about this custom by my parents and elder brothers and sisters. I think it’s very interesting that this custom has been revitalized as this adds more fun to our activities during spring festivals as we have more chances to meet new friends."
