(VOVWORLD) - The General Statistics Office (GSO) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Vietnam have launched a new project to generate and utilise quality population and development data, which is essential to develop and monitor socio-economic development policies, strategies, and plans. In 1977 right after Vietnam became a UN member, UNFPA and the GSO established a cooperative relationship.
Over the past 45 years, the fund has provided remarkable support to the Vietnamese government in health care, mother and child protection, population, and family planning.
To release information on the 2019 Population and Housing Census which was carried out with the support of UNFPA, the GSO has successfully developed a website for the Developed Population Spatial Data System.
Starting this January and integrated on GIS software, the information page updates world trends including to digitize the map of Vietnam with data on population collected from the 2019 Population and Housing Census, environmental and disaster data, and some related statistical data.
Nguyen Trung Tien, GSO’s Deputy Director General, said that the website will help reach the goal of Vietnam Statistical Development Strategy until 2030 with a vision to 2045 to disseminate statistical information to all users in the most transparent, fast, complete and accessible way.
“UNFPA has helped the GSO carry out 5 population and housing censuses from 1979 to 2019 and other national statistical surveys. UNFPA’s financial and technical support in each census has provided Vietnam new methodologies, advanced techniques in the collection, processing and dissemination of data to develop Vietnam’s statistics industry in a modern direction towards improving its capacity and position regionally and internationally,” said Tien.
Vietnam is in the midst of rapid transformation for its socio-economic growth. The country has been implementing the Socio-economic Development Strategy (SEDS) until 2030, the Socio-economic Development Plan (SEDP) till 2025, and the National Plan of Action to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.
Naomi Kitahara, UNFPA Chief Representative in Vietnam, said countries with quality data achieve the most impressive growth.
She said, “UNFPA Vietnam is happy to have worked with the GSO over the past 40 years. We are now entering into the tenth new country program and the GSO is one of the most important partners for UNFPA Vietnam. Under the new country project, we’ll support Vietnam in implementing the newly issued Statistical Development Strategy, the SEDS, and the SEDP and improve the monitoring to achieve SDGs.”

Nguyen Thi Huong, GSO director-general, said with a total budget of 1.9 million USD until 2026, the project aims to apply new technologies and communication platforms to data collection, analysis, and dissemination, and ensuring evidence-based policies, strategies, and programs for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.
