Meeting marking 40th anniversary of national reunification

(VOVworld) – A meeting and parade was held in HCM city on Thursday to mark the 40th anniversary of the liberation of southern Vietnam and national reunification April 30. The meeting was attended by Party leader Nguyen Phu Trong, President Truong Tan Sang, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung, former Party and state leaders, and representatives of war veterans, heroic Vietnamese mothers, and international delegations from Laos, Cambodia, and Cuba.

In his speech to commemorate the event, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung highlighted the significance of the 1975 Spring Victory: “The 1975 Spring Victory liberated southern Vietnam and reunified the nation, opening a new period of national construction and defense. This victory stemmed from patriotism, the desire for peace, independence, freedom, and national reunification as well as Vietnam’s military art and unity under the creative leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam and international support and solidarity.”

Prime Minister Dung thanked socialist countries, particularly the Soviet Union and China and peace loving organizations and people throughout the world for supporting Vietnam in its just struggle for national independence and reunification. He said: “In the spirit of the 1975 Spring Victory, the Party, army and people are determined to realize President Ho Chi Minh’s dream of a more beautiful Vietnam. We are building a united socialist Vietnam with a wealthy people and a strong, democratic, equal, and civilized nation. We will resolutely defend our national sovereignty and territorial integrity. Each and every of us will contribute to boosting the renewal process to turn Vietnam into an industrial nation.”

The meeting was followed by a parade involving people’s armed forces and masses representing workers, farmers, intellectuals, entrepreneurs and social organizations including the Vietnam Fatherland Front, the War Veterans’ Association, the Vietnam Women’s Union, and the Youth Union.

Fireworks displays were held in HCM city and Hanoi the same day to mark this occasion.
