This marks the third consecutive NPT Review Conference unable to adopt a final document because of deep and unresolved differences among some member states.
Delivering closing remarks in his capacity as conference president, Ambassador Do Hung Viet, Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the UN, stressed that despite the absence of a consensus document, member states continue to share the common goal of a world free of nuclear weapons and remain committed to dialogue at a time of growing instability, global fragmentation, and declining trust.
He reaffirmed that the NPT remains the cornerstone of the global nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation architecture, while emphasizing the responsibility of all member states to preserve and strengthen the treaty so it remains effective amid a rapidly changing international security environment.
Delegations widely praised Vietnam for successfully carrying out its role as chair of the conference, recognizing the country’s efforts in steering negotiations in a transparent and constructive manner, while promoting procedural improvements to enhance effectiveness and adapt to changing global realities.
In a message issued after the conference, UN Secretary General António Guterres called on all countries to make full use of every available channel for dialogue, diplomacy, and negotiation to reduce tensions, lower nuclear risks, and ultimately eliminate the nuclear threat. He gave special recognition to Vietnam’s chairmanship, noting the country’s tireless efforts to promote meaningful outcomes in support of the treaty’s core objectives.
