The female staff of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Information and Communications have opted to wear Ao dai at work. They said the dress makes them feel more confident and graceful in communications. Staffer Minh Hue told us: “The Ao dai symbolizes Vietnamese women. It cannot be mistaken for another country costume. No matter what kind of body you have, the Ao dai helps you hide its imperfections.”

Office women prefer clothing which suits their work status and keeps them comfortable. The Ao dai has been modified for office wear with shorter, smaller flaps and pants that are loose-fitting.

Anh Thu, who works at the People’s Committee of district 10, says she has 50 sets of Ao dai: “The Ao dai is beautiful. I feel more confident and cheerful when I wear it to work. The flaps should be neither too long nor too large so we can move easily.”

The Ao dai is not just a costume for festivals and formal events. It’s being worn more often in the office and in daily life.
