On September 2, 1945, President Ho Chi Minh read the Declaration of Independence saying “The interim government of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam officially announces to the world that Vietnam has the right to enjoy freedom and independence, and in fact, it has become an independent and liberal country. All Vietnamese people are determined to give what it takes to protect the country’s freedom and independence.”

A golden page in Vietnam’s history and a landmark in world history

September 2, 1945 was a resplendent milestone in Vietnam’s thousand of years of national construction and defense. The Declaration of Independence was the first legal document to establish the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, confirming the freedom and independence of Vietnamese people internationally. The Declaration laid a foundation for a Vietnamese state governed by law, striving for independence, freedom, and happiness, and guiding the revolutionary cause to build a government of the people, by the people, and for the people.

The Declaration of Independence marked the victory of the Vietnamese people’s fight against feudalism and colonialism after nearly a century. The Vietnamese, under the leadership of the Communist Party, continued the revolutionary cause to liberate the south and unify the nation in 1975. Historian Duong Trung Quoc said: “President Ho Chi Minh’s Declaration of Independence on September 2, 1945 set up a democratic republic state, ended feudalism, fascism, and colonialism. Vietnam entered a new historical period as a democratic republic which generated more power for national resistance wars afterwards.”

The Democratic Republic of Vietnam was the fist independent nation among colonized countries worldwide and the first worker-peasant state in Southeast Asia.

Momentum for future

Over the past 69 years Vietnam has continuously developed. The renewal process over the past 25 years has gained tremendous results. Vietnam has become a symbol of social stability, poverty reduction, and humanity in the 21st century.

Vietnam aims to become an industrial nation by 2020, with political and social stability, raising people’s living conditions, and firmly protecting national sovereignty and territorial integrity. State President Truong Tan Sang said: “Vietnam has overcome a number of challenges. The Party, state, and people have exerted great efforts and have had remarkable achievements. The urgency of national construction and defense requires a high consensus of the will and actions. We must commit to work harder, to honor our ancestors and the nation’s triumphant history and for our future generations.”
