(VOVworld)-2016 witnessed many unexpected events in the US with Donald Trump’s victory in the presidential election being the highlight.
The presidential election dominated the US political landscape in 2016. Contrary to forecasts, analysis and public opinion polls, political outsider Donald Trump unexpectedly became the 45th
US President. With shocking statements, Trump left other Republican contestants behind in the primaries and defeated Democrat rival Hillary Clinton in November 8’s voting. He was also named “Person of the Year” by Time magazine and AFP.

Racial discrimination continued to be a problem in the US in 2016. Nearly 1000 people were shot dead by the police, including 350 black and Latin American people. The incidents sparked demonstrations across the US.
Many shootings were also reported in the US with some of the suspects being Muslim immigrants, who apparently had connection to terrorism or have been radicalized. Most mass-shooting incidents, however were carried out by people born in the US.
Discrimination and home-grown terrorism will continue to be major challenges facing the Trump administration.
