Policies on revolutionary contributors in place

In response to the Prime Minister’s Directive on the General Census setting preferential policies for revolutionary contributors in the 2014-2015 period, the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee has worked with the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs to implement a number of programs. Beneficiaries of these programs are families of war martyrs, war invalids, heroic Vietnamese mothers, victims of toxic chemicals during the war, revolutionary contributors and former youth volunteers. At a meeting with the Policy Department of the General Department of Politics of the Vietnam People’s Army and the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs, President of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Nguyen Thien Nhan said:

“We have managed to ensure that 62% of social beneficiaries receive support and allowances. We try to get all pending cases solved”.

The Party and State have assigned the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs to implement a program on Locating and Identifying Vietnamese Persons Missing in the War. Minister Pham Thi Hai Chuyen said: “There are more than 8,000 cases that have not been listed in the Association of Families of War Martyrs. We have worked with the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Public Security and the Vietnam Science Academy to collect samples of these 8,000 cases. This is an initial result of our program. The government has permitted us to upgrade 3 gene analysis centers, which will help us to identify soldiers missing in action”.

Upholding Vietnamese tradition of showing gratitude

Activities are underway across Vietnam to mark the 68th anniversary of War Invalids and Martyrs’ Day, July 27. Leaders of the Party, State, National Assembly, government and the Fatherland Front visited and presented gifts to revolutionary contributors. A program took place in Hanoi on Sunday to express gratitude to families of war martyrs, heroic mothers, and revolutionary contributors. The program featured revolutionary songs and reports on the search and repatriation of soldiers’ remains. Moving stories of those who searched and repatriated soldiers’ remains in Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam were told in the program. Colonel Nguyen Van Huy is Head of the Team for Repatriation of Soldiers’ Remains in the Political Department of Military Zone 2:“First of all, we have to locate the places martyrs were buried during the anti-France and anti-US wars. After locating them, we have to identify them using profiles and combat maps. We also get information from letters to their families and from war veterans who were their comrades and who buried them”.

Candles were lit at thousands of cemeteries in cities and provinces across the nation on July 26 in memory of the fallen soldiers. At Mai Dich cemetery, Hanoi, the Hanoi Youth Union and the Youth Union organizations of central agencies, businesses, and the Ministry of Public Security lit candles to show the gratitude of younger generations to those who gave their lives for national independence and freedom.

The movement of showing gratitude has spread throughout cities, provinces and villages. The movement reflects the Vietnamese people’s tradition of “Drinking water, remembering its source”.
