56% of Britons want to stay in EU

(VOVworld) – A new poll from Ipsos MORI shows that 56% of Britons would vote to stay in the European Union, compared with 36% who would choose to leave if a referendum were conducted. The poll indicated increased support for the EU since discussions about whether to stay or leave were revived by the anti-EU UK Independence Party (UKIP) gaining in popularity.

The poll was conducted after British PM David Cameron promised a 2017 referendum on British membership in the EU, if the Conservative Party wins an outright majority at the next general election in 2015. Cameron pledged to ask for certain EU reforms and revisions of things he thought were no longer appropriate in the 21st century. Jean-Claude Juncker, the incoming president of the European Commission, rejected out of hand any attempt by David Cameron to “destroy” the fundamental rules of the EU.
