Alexandre Yersin awarded posthumous title of “Honorary citizen of Vietnam”

(VOVworld) – Khanh Hoa province’s Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism announced the state’s decision to grant the posthumous title of “Honorary citizen of Vietnam” on doctor Alexandre Yersin on Monday.

Marking the occasion, the Club of Alexandre Yersin’s admirers in Nha Trang city, Khanh Hoa province, organized a meeting to mark his 151st birthday. Head of the Club, Nguyen Thi The Tram said Alexandre Yersin deserved to be granted the title “Honorary citizen of Vietnam” for his contributions to Nha Trang and Vietnam over the past century.

Yersin, born in Switzerland, studied medicine at prestigious institutes in Switzerland, Germany, and France. In 1891 he moved to Vietnam and lived in Nha Trang until the end of his life. He was the founder of the Nha Trang Pasteur Institute and co-founder and the first principal of the Indochina Medical College, the predecessor of the current Hanoi Medical University and the Hanoi University of Pharmacy.
