Belgium to deploy more than 1,000 extra police to help fight radicalisation

(VOVworld) – The Belgian government pledged on Friday that it will deploy 1,000 new police officers across Belgium by 2019, with 300 of them added this year and 500 others for next year.

This is a program to combat Islamist radicalization in and around Brussels, including Laeken, Saint-Gilles, Anderlecht, Molenbeek, Koekelberg, St-Josse, and Schaerbeek. The government agreed to maintain the presence of troops on Belgian streets until March 5th with 1,000 troops mobilized, 700 of them doing their duty on the streets.
Security alert is still at level 3. Belgian Interior Minister Jan Jambon put forward a plan to sweep out Molenbeek which is considered Belgium’s “Jihadi village” with a number of subjects related to Paris attack on November 13th, 2015.
