Community based disaster risk management has been promoted in Vietnam’s 6,000 communes with two-thirds of locals receiving training. This initiative was practiced based on the availability of contingent plans and resources. Delegates from the APEC economies have emphasized the importance of community in risk management and share experiences in practices and policy making.

Deputy Foreign Minister Vu Hong Nam addresses the workshop

Deputy Foreign Minister Vu Hong Nam hailed the needs of early warnings, facilities and communications on awareness raising: “People should be trained to improve their understanding so that they will make appropriate behaviors when facing natural disaster threats.
This could be done by the media and local government instruction, for example leaflets and guidance of storm-proof housing construction. Timely warnings by weather forecasts are equally important.”
Further discussion on this issue will be continued in a related forum to be held in the Philippines later this month.
