(VOVworld) - The Prime Minister has approved a new project to implement a sustainable supply chain for the Tra and Basa fish industry. The project is funded by the European Union under the Switch-Asia network of the EU. The program aims to help Vietnam’s pangasius industry increase its competitiveness in the global market. The EU will directly support the whole supply chain from raising baby fish, production of cattle-food, and processing to bringing Vietnam’s Tra fish to foreign importers and end-users. The EU is Vietnam’s largest Tra fish consumer. The project will be implemented over four years until 2017, focusing on increasing production capacity, enhancing product quality, and reducing environmental impact and cost of production through applying Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production standard. It also helps Vietnamese small and medium enterprises exchange information and apply sustainable standards including the Aquaculture Stewardship Council and Good Agricultural Practices, GlobalGAP, towards sustainable production in order to improve the competitiveness of the Tra fish industry on the world market.
