The Party leader described the revolutionary press as an effective tool for social development. Founded by President Ho Chi Minh 90 years ago, Vietnam’s revolutionary press has always accompanied the Communist Party of Vietnam and Vietnamese people in their fight for national independence and socialism. In the past struggles for national liberation, Vietnam’s revolutionary press has become an important military arm in the ideological front. Over the past 30 years of national renovation, journalists have upheld role models and contributed to combating negatives and safeguarding national sovereignty. They have also contributed to the building of Party guidelines and State policies, promoting people’s rights, expanding foreign relations and introducing Vietnam to international friends.

Vietnam has 849 newspapers, 67 radio and TV stations, 98 magazines and online newspapers and one national news agency recruiting about 35,000 journalists. Thanks to technological advances, journalists have more favorable working conditions, especially in information gathering. But trust to journalism has declined. The Party leader urged journalists to improve their political perception, professionalism and particularly code of ethics. He stressed revolutionary press need to strengthen their political stance amidst the information booming era.

Party leader Nguyen Phu Trong asked media agencies to improve their management while ensuring the principles of upholding the Party leadership and State management in journalism and ensuring the press development be in line with the national development and common trend. The Party leader stressed the importance of creating favorable conditions for press activities, increasing investment in press development and strengthening the management of the press network. He underlined the need to better manage the use of and information on the internet.

Finally, the Party leader asked media agencies to uphold emulation movements and create forums for people to contribute their opinions to documents of the 12th National Party Congress. Trong said this is an opportunity to demonstrate the Party’s consistent guidelines to resolutely combat distortions of hostile forces and those who abuse freedom and democracy to demand pluralism and multiparty. He concluded that press should play a vanguard role in the ideological front to lay bare attempts of hostile forces and strengthen the public’s trust in the Party, State and regime.
