US approves airstrikes targeting northern Iraq

(VOVworld) - Kurdish spokesperson Holgard Hekmat told reporters on Friday that American F-16s first entered Iraqi airspace on a reconnaissance mission and are now targeting ISIS or the Islamic State, in Gwer and in the Sinjar region, northern Iraq. He added that US warplanes struck the bridge linking Mosul to Gwer which had been used by the Islamic State to channel reinforcements and ammunition to Gwer.

Earlier on Thursday, US President Barack Obama authorized targeted air strikes against Sunni fighters in Iraq, saying the measure was meant to avert "genocide" in the country.
