Vietnam, US boost bilateral cooperation

(VOVworld) – Deputy Foreign Minister Ha Kim Ngoc has stressed that Vietnam is ready to work with the new US administration to consolidate the bilateral comprehensive partnership.

During separate meetings with high-ranking US officials in Washington over the past 4 days, Ngoc said both countries should maintain the current progress in economic and trade ties, increase cooperation in education and training, science and technology, security and defense, overcoming the consequences of war, and humanitarian issues.

US officials reiterated a guideline supported by both the Democratic and Republican Party to esteem the comprehensive partnership with Vietnam and agreed to boost the exchange of delegations at all levels to enhance potential cooperation areas including the Vietnam-US Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA). The two sides discussed terrorism, traditional and non-traditional security challenges, and the situation in the East Sea. The US said it considers the Asia-Pacific region a key part of its foreign relation strategy, supports ASEAN’s role and the mechanisms led by ASEAN, and ASEAN’s stance on the East Sea, and pledged to implement a number of steps to strengthen bilateral relations with specific ASEAN members.
