(VOVworld) – The 55th session of the Assemblies of the Member States of the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) opened in Geneva, Switzerland, on Monday, involving delegations from 188 countries and organizations. Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Tran Viet Thanh led the Vietnamese delegation to the event.
WIPO Director-General Francis Gurry delivered a speech underlining progress made in public-private partnerships, and in the integration of basic infrastructure into the intellectual property (IP) system, which has taken place globally, especially in developing countries. On the sideline of the five-day session, the Vietnamese delegation will hold bilateral meetings with Japanese and Russian partners, the WIPO Director-General and the Deputy Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO).
At the last WIPO Assemblies’ session in October, 2014, Vietnamese Ambassador to the UN, the WTO, and other international organisations in Geneva Nguyen Trung Thanh was elected as Chair of the Coordination Committee. It’s the first time Vietnam was elected to this post, illustrating its prestige and active participation in WIPO.
